    Benchmark Shootout 2018

    3DAAA Benchmark Shootout

The 2018 Benchmark shoot started early for Grant Elsley, Jamie Bradshaw, Robbie Vayro, Brett Pirlo and Greg Scott setting the ranges and getting the venue sorted.
The meet and greet on Friday night with Pizza at the Saloon was a great event. But the debate still rages on about using Banana as a filling on a pizza.
Saturday started with a muster and shoot groups organised and sent out to the ranges. Some great scores were handed in at the end of the shooting Saturday.
The top 10 was slightly different with everyone shooting in a last man standing format. Starting with having to shoot a 10 to stay alive, then a 12 to stay in it. It came down too Ian Summers and Ryan Corner shooting at a 14 on a small Javelina. Ian shot and missed the 14 while Ryan held his nerve and smoked the 14 to take the win.
Dinner was held in the saloon with some great entertainment, I am sure everyone is still trying to decipher Brett Pirlo’s story though.
Sunday started with a muster and peer groups sent out to the range. Once all shooters had handed there score cards back in. The shoot off placings for the top 5 in each division was sorted.
Rhys Aizlewood, Steven Bartley, Mark Corner, William Watson and Scott Hayden fought out the barebow class, with Rhys coming out on top.
In the restricted class Damien Ormiston, Stefan Ivanisevic, William Dreyer, Brad Fountain and Ryan Corner  made the shoot off, with Damien holding on for the win.
Sam Wearne, Andrea McFarlane, Mikala Shevill, Don Tomasetig and Josh Shone fought it out in the unrestricted class, Sam held on for First but some impressive shooting from the youngest in that class Mikala who edged ahead of Andrea into second place on the last arrow.
Gerard Miles, Brett Pirlo, Ben Doyle, Jock Thompson and Ian Summers fought out in the open class. Some impressive shooting from Brett Pirlo saw him edge out Gerard to take out first place.
We all learned that just because we know the distance doesn’t necessarily mean we will shoot great scores, at least with unknown distances we can blame a bad shot on our range estimation. We hope you all enjoyed the ranges and the shoot format.
The committee would like too thank all the wonderful sponsors that made this event the success it was.
And lastly to those that competed in the event you all made our efforts worth while.

    3DAAA Queensland State Titles

What a weekend we had at our shoot. Everything about the weekend – the ranges, the fabulous food and of course all of the awesome people that braved the cooler weather to come out and shoot and also the people that didn’t shoot and volunteered their time to help out. The guys set some very challenging courses and far out did themselves & set a very high bar for others to follow  The ladies put on some fantastic yummy tucker in the canteen. Good to see competitors travel from far & wide especially the Roma & Casino crews  Well done to everyone that came a place and good shooting to all other competitors. The Top 10 shoot off was an event not to missed with our very own Josh Smith taking out the Sighted Top 10. Well done Josh. It was his 1st Top 10 win Would like to say a big Thank You to everyone for all your support & assistance for our shoot. We were very happy with the turn out with just shy of 100 competitors. Till next time. Here are some pics from the weekend. Enjoy

  • Mendooran 2018

    Mendooran 2018

    3DAAA NSW State Series

The weekend of the 14th and 15th July 2018 will be remembered for years to come, officially Dubbo recorded it’s coldest ever day with -5.8C, the first ever sanctioned shoot for Dubbo 3D Archers and the first Castlereagh 3D Championship, hosted in Mendooran, NSW.
The weekend saw 91 shooters come to Mendooran for a winter shoot on excellent grounds. The weekend started with nominations at the Royal Hotel, Mendooran on Friday night, with old friends and newbies enjoying the country hospitality and some cracking meals. The freeze set in on the Friday night, some would say it was ‘chilly’ others would say ‘Antarctic’. Unofficial records had the range opening to the balmy temperature of -8.2C. The cold start was offset by amazing clear and windless days, plenty of warm food from the canteens and the warm friendship and camaraderie displayed throughout the weekend. The ranges were a fantastic mixture of hills, dense forest, gully’s and flat open shots, challenging the skills of ranging and shot execution.
Saturday had another first of Jenette Harvey shooting her first 100 round. With some other mentionable days, particularly for Ethan Wilkinson only dropping 6 points for the day shooting a 294/300 for Saturday. This tremendous results were capped off by the Top 10 shootoff, which was given approval to be shoot in town, across the road from the Hotel to across the creek, Alex Elvin got to choose the target and went for the jugular, setting an alligator at 41m for the shot to beat. This played out well for him, as Alex was the eventual winner of the shoot off.
Saturday night was a Pig on the spit at the Hotel and a great night had by all.
Sunday morning was slightly warmer, starting the day at -4C. Four more shooters were added to the 100 round sheet with Ian Summers, Jamie Bradshaw, Julie Evans and Norm Sager shooting perfect rounds for the day. The scores rolled. Culminating in close scores and a fantastic turn out to the presentation in the warm sunshine at the Royal Hotel, Mendooran. The results were strong with Ben Doyle coming out on top in MBO and Jo Moffitt taking FBO, the other hotly contested categories had Jamie Gilroy taking out Hunter Class and Norm Sager taking out MSR.
Dubbo 3D Archers would like to thank all our sponsors for their support, especially Caltex, the Royal Hotel, Mendooran and Butchers on Macquarie, Dubbo. Being our first shoot we are exceptionally grateful for all the words of support and advice given, and we are especially thankful
Thank you to all the travelling shooters and we look forward to our next shoot.

  • Hinterland 2018

    Hinterland 2018

    3DAAA Queensland State Series

We welcomed 98 competitors to our club for the shoot. The usual cool brisk morning with a warm gas heater and open fires at our newly renovated undercover area.
5 ranges were open making for a fairly smooth shoot and most seemed to enjoy the ranges.
Canteen was very consistent with hungry competitors for most of the two days.
The top ten was held on the Sunday to make it fair to all shooters over all the ranges.
Recurve top 10 winner was Billy Watson and Compound was Ian Ferguson. Congratulations to all the shooters. They all did a wonderful job.
5 x 100’s were given on the weekend which proved it was a fare shoot.
Hinterland had a small auction for old targets and got a good response in the bidding.
On the Sunday after the shoot and the top 10 was finalized we had presentations and the raffle. We had lots of prizes and most people got plenty of prizes each.
A big thank you to the person from another club who helped to bring in targets.
I don’t know his name but it was very appreciated.
The rain gods held off until after the presentation and after such an exhausting weekend we were blessed that everyone left without getting wet.
Hope to see everyone again next year for another great weekend.
  • Diamond Valley Archers – June 2018

Diamond Valley Archers – June 2018

    3DAAA Victorian State Series

The time came round for the second 3DAAA event to be run at Diamond Valley Archers Inc. for 2018. This also gives the course setters a chance to review the layout and the grounds from running our first event in summer to now planning to manage the ranges in now winter.
Trees and foliage change, the tracks and pathways used in summer have altered and new shot lanes can be created adding to the changes of where we place the 3D targets.
With the layouts planned, the targets checked the courses came together with the assistance of DVA team. The competitors started arriving and the day events soon began.
The ranges emphasised targets size and placement to create depth and perception combined with the use of dead ground all challenging the competitors to think of their shots and consider or reconsider that first thought of distance estimation.
Day 1 scores soon reflected this and the comments such as “that was so much closer, than I estimated it to be” “the crocodile easy enough but why an 8”, “that honey bear looked so simple, until we were getting our arrows and realised the perception of shot placement into a river bed”, “the black panther on the rock made me think twice on what I had set my sights to when looking at the target at full draw”. It was pleasing to get the feedback from the competitors across all divisions as they came in with score cards in hand and getting their lunches around the clubrooms – for one archer though getting a perfect round on the 3rd range great work Drew Orton.
With the first three rounds completed, dinner preparations made for members staying over it was time to relay the courses – team one was already out and pulling up the furthest range targets – team two comprising of some of our junior archers took to the field to learn and assist in relaying the 20 targets for the next day. It did not take these juniors long to get the idea of how to make shots interesting and challenging, add to this that each one in the team was responsible for a different component on each target created some very interesting shots for day two.
Day 2 the weather was again kind to us and the archers worked their way across the ranges easily and once again the field course was alive with comments of success and well those that were not so successful. Once again the courses delivered as promised and people came back excited about how close they came to the perfect round, how it was not their day, but all about how much fun they had working their way across the ranges. Yet again another archer took out his first perfect round of 100 – congratulations Sam Mufale
With the assistance of the new team in training results were up and finalised 30 to 40 mins earlier, and presentations & announcements were done with competitors heading home ahead of time with some staying back to practice on the target ranges and others planning their trips to the next events.
Presentations done the talk was now all about the next events – 1 day 3D back at DVA on the 29th of July 2018 during the day in the evening we will be running the 3D AAA Indoors & Twin Cities Archers will also be running 3D AAA Indoors refer to the 3D AAA website for times and details followed by the next two day event to be held on the 17th & 18th of August 2018 at Twin Cities Archers.
Some recollections of the two days from – Sam (CUBA)
At the 3D at DVA I had a good time and a good shoot claiming my first straight 100 as well as breaking my personal record. The targets set across the field were great with some challenging and difficult targets. I couldn’t have completed my straight 100 without the support of Cordell Martin and Shaylen. I had a great shoot as well as many other people. Thanks for reading Sam
Look forward to seeing you there.
  • State of Origin- Casino 2018

    State of Origin- Casino 2018

    3DAAA State of Origin

Saturday started off with a surprisingly beautiful morning with no forecast of torrential rain unlike last year, much too everyone’s relief.
Shooters set off to shoot ranges in high spirits, with a major difference in the use of land across the road, so made things a little bit more interesting.
With the finish of shooting and as per usual at the State of Origin, no top 10 held on Saturday, The AGM was held in town this year things were very quite at the range Saturday night.
Sunday arrived once again under beautiful skies, shooters set out too make up on Saturday scores, or too hold onto good form from Saturday.
The all important state of origin trophy hinges on results of all competitors, so all competitors were taking things as serious as they do. And too make the funniest of top ten shoots of the year.
The bare bowers set the scene for a great spectacle. Mark Rhinebot made the afternoon enjoyable with his absolute one eyed QLD approach which didn’t help. The sighted shooters continued the great spectacle taking over from the bare bowers.
With the help of the Cubs and junior’s the mighty Blues took the win, must have been a good omen for things too come.
After the presentation a small but eager crowd attended the mentoring program, shame the QLDers had too go back too work Monday, Which affected the numbers. Afterwards a small impromptu gathering enjoyed many tall tales around the camp fire. Look forward to seeing you all next year. Go the BLUES
  • Lake Macquarie 2018

    Lake Macquarie 2018

    3DAAA NSW State Series

Thursday, still two days to go, and already the camper vans started rolling in. By Friday afternoon the club grounds were already packed. After having low numbers the previous year, things were looking much more promising this year.

The new committee, especially newly elected President Michael McRae, had spent the last few months cleaning, painting and fixing up the clubhouse and all the facilities. The club have never looked this good and the whole club was keen to show it off to all the visitors.

Registrations started on Friday night, and we could already see that we were going to have good numbers. In the morning, drawn in by the smell of bacon and eggs on the barbie, the masses ascended on the clubhouse to register. Treasurer Colin Keene’s experience and organisational skills made sure that everything was setup and ready to go to ensure everyone got processed quickly and get them on the ranges.

Simo Weir and Michael McRae had been working tirelessly to set up 5 of the best ranges LMFA had ever produced. With only one perfect round recorded all weekend and multiple compliments coming back, it was mission accomplished for them.

Saturday afternoon, with the sun sitting low, Josh Radoll ran the top ten shoot out. Jamie Bradshaw, MBO, won the Sighted comp and Estelle Boshoff, FBU, won the Unaided comp.

After all the walking and shooting, everyone was ready for a good meal and Donna Gilroy did not disappoint. With a menu that ranged from Lambs Fry to Apple slice, there was something for every taste.

The last day arrived and everyone was keen to shoot the last two ranges of the day. Most people got out early and soon the club house was deserted. Peter Gabriel and Yolandie Goodyear made sure the canteen was ready for when everyone returned for lunch and learned from the previous day that this was a hungry bunch of shooters, so extra provisions was brought in overnight.

From mid morning the scores started to roll in. The usual archery excuses started to fly as people handed in their score cards, but almost everyone commented on having a great weekend. After everyone had lunch and all the scores were in, it was time for the prize giving and raffle draw. And what a raffle table it was; with targets and bows from Benson Archery and Tenzone and sets of strings from Big Fella’s Bow Strings the tickets sold themselves.

The highest male score came from Ian Summers, MBO, with 461 and highest female score of 454 was recorded by Jenette Harvey, FBO. Highest Cub score had to be counted back as Seth Sutton and Isaac Phillips scored 443 each, but eventually it went to Isaac. Ethan Wilkinson scored 427 and took out highest Youth score, with Sarah Keene taking top female youth honours with a score of 314.

2018 will go down as one of the best events yet at LMFA and we can’t wait to go even better next year!

  • Ipswich 2018

    3DAAA Queensland State Series

Another Ipswich Field Archery Club shoot is done and dusted for the year. The weather was very kind to us  with glorious sunshine on both days. The first QLD 3DAAA Sanctioned shoot of the year was on the 5th and 6th May  2018.  We had a total of 105 competitors from NSW and QLD who travelled  to compete in the event. Your support is very much appreciated.

The canteen also provided a delectable array of food and drinks to satisfy those hungry and thirsty archers. We would like to thank the Ipswich Lions Club for keeping the food up to hungry archers.

The top 10 shoot off was held on Sunday afternoon prior to the presentation. The winner of the  sighted top 10 was  compound shooter Brett Pirlo and the  un aid  winner was recurve shooter Scott Hayden.

The committee would like to thank you all for attending our shoot, it was a pleasure to have you there and hope you had an enjoyable weekend.
