    Twin City- August 2019

    3DAAA Victorian State Series

Twin City Archers Gippsland hosted a round of the Victorian 3DAAA series on the weekend of 17th – 18th August 2019 where we were pleased to have over 40 archers competing in what ended up being perfect conditions with clear skies and slight wind.

The lead up had not been so kind with courses being set out the previous weekend in rain and soggy grounds. This tested those setting up to ensure safety of the competitors was maintained while still providing challenging shots. Fortunately the weather conditions improved during the week with the grounds drying up and everything ready for those coming to shot on the weekend.

Registration Saturday morning was great for catching up with fellow archers from both DVA and MPB as well as some visitors from ABA clubs in the area coming along to have a go at 3D. We also welcomed Sam Mufale from DVA back from his trip to the USA where he represented 3DAAA in the IBO World Championships, placing 7th overall in the CUBA division. Great effort Sam and thanks heaps to Cordell for picking him up from the airport and bringing him along to our shoot.

Shooting got underway and those competing were presented with some new layouts and shots to challenge them. The sun, although pleasant, provided difficulties in sighting the targets and shade was required for many competitors. Feedback at the end of the day was great with everyone enjoying the days shoot and the new layouts provided. Semi Pro division was tight with only one point separating the top spots. Sam Mufale came in with the only 100 of the day which was a great effort considering he had jet lag from just arriving back from the States.

Once the courses were reset for the next day of competition many of the archers got together for tea at the local Morwell Club for a bit of socialising and analysis of the days shoot. This then moved onto the club where a few of the keener archers set up a 3D indoor course with animals out to 30m for a bit of friendly competition. This is something we will try and build on for future shoots. Thanks to Paul Eagle and Will Ellen for setting this up.

Sunday arrived as another perfect day for shooting and everyone was keen to get back out and enjoy the day. Ground needed to be made up by some and others were trying to hold their position so a steady head was going to be an important part of the day. At the end of another great day there were another two 100s shot, one by Sam Mufale in the CUBA division, the other by Rory Smith in the Semi Pro division.

Thank you to all those that made the weekend successful, from catering, setup and running of the shoot and to all those who attended and competed in the various divisions. Congratulations to all the winners, results are on the 3DAAA website.

    Milbrodale 2019

    3DAAA NSW State Titles

This year 3DAAA made the decision to host and run the NSW State Titles to fill a gap in the calendar at a new venue in the Hunter Valley. The venue being the location that holds the annual Tuff Trucks event at Milbrodale.
With lots of ground work laying out the ranges months before the event, the
range setters were very excited with what they had to work with, from flat open ranges to ranges with lots of dead ground.
In the week leading into the event the crew from Cessnock Archers arrived and started work laying out the ranges and to get it all set up for the 128 archers who attended. The weather couldn’t have been any better especially after the real cold conditions the week before.
With the archers heading out Saturday morning to start shooting the members from Port Stephens Archers started planning the roast dinner for the many competitors that camped that night. From all reports it was a great meal.
With some great scores coming in, it was time to start the top 10 shootout with Jamie Gilroy being the No1 qualifier with a great score of 292. After the 1st round it was down to just 2 shooters with Jason Archer coming out with
his second Top Ten win in a row.
Sunday was just as good weather wise and saw all the shooters heading out to finish their final 20 targets for the weekend, hoping to either improve on their Saturdays scores or shoot just as good.
Once everyone finished Dubbo 3D Archers took care of the scores and got the presentations up and running nice and early so everyone could hit the road for a safe travel home.
In the team’s events, Port Stephens Archers came out on top in the club teams and the team from Big Fella Bowstrings were victorious in the sponsored teams.
There were plenty of great scores shot during the weekend with one stand out on Sunday, Josie Hatch in CUBF coming in with a 200, congratulations Josie.
From all the comments from the archers about the ranges and the venue,
3DAAA will be looking at adding this venue once again in 2020. A big thank you to the crew from Cessnock for the ranges, The Boys from Dubbo for doing the admin all weekend and all the workers from Port Stephens Archers for doing such a fine job catering for the event. Last but not least thank you to everyone that attended, without your attendance none of this would be possible.
Hope to see you all at the last NSW State series shoot for 2019 to be held at Moonan Flat on the October long weekend.

  • Mendooran- 2019

    Mendooran- 2019

    3DAAA NSW State Series

The 13th and 14th of August saw Dubbo 3D Archers hold the second Castlereagh 3D Championship at Mendooran NSW. On the same weekend last year we had an extremely cold weather event that saw the temperatures plummet to -8 but the shooters returned this year for more from the small central west town, hopefully not quite as cold.
The Dubbo club was out to show how challenging the Mendooran shooting grounds could be this year and put our course setters and their teams to the task. After the weeks of planning and discussions about the layout the shots were planed and they did for-fill the mandate.
Friday night at the Royal Hotel Mendooran saw 115 shooters register for the weekend’s tournament while enjoying catching up with old friends in the warmth of the historic pub. This year we drew competitors from most parts of NSW but even some of our fellow archers from QLD made the trip down to the banks of the Castlereagh River.
Saturday morning was nice and fresh but nothing the Archers couldn’t handle. The courses had most aspects of 3D archery covered. That being dead ground, hollow ground, steep up and down hill shots. Due to ongoing drought the only thing missing was a water shot and a lack of vegetation to make a tunnel to shoot through. As the Saturday scores started pile up the feedback from competitors was almost the same, the courses were challenging. The Top Ten shoot-off was led by Jamie Gilroy who shot the day’s high score an impressive 283 from 300. Shooting the top ten over the banks of the Castlereagh drew a large number of spectators some archers and others locals, all got too experienced a high level of skill and expertise. After an enthralling contest Jason Archer took out his first Top Ten victory and the crowds slowly disbursed for an enjoyable evening around the fires.
Sunday and the weather got a little colder but the wind was holding off for the early stages of the rounds. Amber Reinbott shot 100 in her first round of the day on undoubtedly the hardest course of the weekend the dreaded C. Some of the cuts on the range were so big we had a target almost have its back shot out and let’s not even talk about the Alligator on the rock.
The other 100 for the weekend was in Semi Pro with Isaac Scarr destroying Course D. Sponsored Teams went to Big Fella Bowstrings and Clubs was taken out by Lake Macquarie 2 well done.
On behalf of Dubbo 3D Archers I would like to thank all of our sponsors for the raffle table, Need-A-Feed catering, Royal Hotel Mendooran, Rols Masters, the township of Mendooran and everyone who travelled to our event. Thank you all and see you next year.

  • Caboolture 2019

    Caboolture 2019

    3DAAA Queensland State Series

What an epic weekend we had at the Caboolture and District Bowmen Sanctioned shoot on the 6-7 July. The courses were fantastic & challenging, with all the slippy slidey muddy sections of the courses. The course setters did it again & set some courses that needed us to be at the top of our game. Saturday saw some drenching rain fall but not even the weather gods could keep us away… Sunday saw the sun shine to try & dry out some of the courses. The ladies in the canteen kept our bellies full with all that wonderful food.

The top Ten on Sunday afternoon showed off our best of the best with Brian McFarlane winning the aided top 10 and Richard Vranesic winning the barebow top 10 and the trophies were outstanding. There were some very good scores shot over the weekend with the stand out being Amber Reinbott shooting a perfect 300 on Saturday. Everyone left with a smile on their face after shooting a very challenging and enjoyable 2 days

  • Lake Macquarie 2019

    Lake Macquarie 2019

    3DAAA NSW State Series

Season 2019 of the NSW State Series surged forward over the weekend of 18-19 May, when Lake Macquarie Field Archers hosted the 3DAAA community for the Lake Macquarie 3D Classic. The long glorious autumn weather held out for us, presenting two of the most perfect days of shooting that we could have asked for. And the crowds responded with 144 shooters hitting the range.

Simeon Weir, with the assistance of protégé Mick McRae and the rest of the team, called on all his mastery to prepare five diverse and challenging ranges that allowed no moment of complacency for the unwary shooter.

Solid scores were turned in, with 100’s awarded to Grant Elsley (x2), Gerard Miles, Owen Kirkman, Mark Firth, Norm Sager and Jamie Gilroy.

Grant Elsley took out Semi-pro with an impressive 485/500 for the weekend off the orange peg.

Highest Female score of the weekend was Sarah Keene on 458 in FHC.

Highest Unaided score was Libby White on 390 in FBU.

Pat White was the winner of the Unaided Top 10, with Blaine Scarr taking out the sighted Top 10.

Donna Gilroy led an army of helpers to run a cracker of a canteen over the weekend, and turned out a 4 course South African themed feast on the Saturday night enjoyed by an appreciative hoard. If you missed out, don’t make the same mistake next year.

Our thanks to the many Lake Macquarie club members who contributed to the success of the shoot.

Lake Macquarie Field Archers hold regular shoots roughly every 2nd Sunday throughout the year and we would welcome you to join us. Check out the calendar at www.lmfa.com.au

We also have a 1-day medal shoot as part of the Lake Macquarie City Games Sunday 15th September. And of course, we plan to be back again with the Lake Mac 3D Classic again in May 2020.

    See you all there!

  • Ipswich 2019

    Ipswich 2019

    3DAAA QLD State Series

Well Ipswich kicked off the start of another year of some tough competition. We had a turnout of 97 competitors for the weekend, with some travelling from across the border, thank you all for coming up.

The weather gods stayed kind to us for the weekend, except for a light shower Saturday afternoon. We seen some real challenging courses this year, our range setters definitely didn’t hold back this year, with the use of the new 3daaa approved cougar targets making a debut, and making for some definite head scratching shots. But still didn’t stop Warren Swan, Brenton Addington, Brett Pirlo and Stefan Ivanisevic from scoring 100 each for the weekend.

Saturday afternoon there was also a great mentoring session held with Dustyn Oloman, Brett Pirlo, Richard Peters and Scott Hayden sharing their knowledge.

Saturday night seen some great food, with a spit roast and veggies for dinner with no one going home hungry, and good ole bonfire with lots of laughs had by all.

Sunday seen 2 more great courses with plenty of tricky shots. Some fun for the kids thanks to Ray Knight and Brett Pirlo, also a big thanks to everyone who donated prizes for our raffles. And then it was on to the serious side of business with the top 10 shootout and presentations, congratulations to Steve Shorten for taking out the aided, and Richard Peters for taking out the unaided top 10 shootouts.

Ipswich won the club team event with a score total of 1429.

We had 2 sponsored teams competing seeing Bohning Archery winning with a score of 943, but Venom Archery was very close behind with 941.

A big thankyou goes to Brett Pirlo and his crew for organising an amazing feed Saturday night,

Thank you to our local Lions club for looking after the canteen, they done a great job as always, keeps stress levels down on poor Bernie.

Thanks to Tiarnee Lowe and Monica Knight for keeping scores. Great job ladies

Congratulations to all our winners and grinners and thank you all for coming out.

  • Lake Glenbawn 2019

    Lake Glenbawn 2019

    3DAAA NSW State Series

A wonderful weekend was had at The LGFA shoot in April, with 89 shooters in attendance and perfect weather. The feedback was great on the five set ranges. We had some tricky ranges along with one easy flat range to keep the arthritic shooters smiling.  The lighting was tough on some of the targets making them hard to see.

Three archers Ethan Bowden, Josh Radoll and Lachlan Scott managed to shoot 100’s over the two days which was great,  however it did not please our range setters as their aim is to make them tricky for the archers, but in the end were happy for these guys.

Saturday afternoon saw the Top 10 shootout take place at the club house with some very good scores. After the 1st round there were 4 shooters left who took on the Mozzie target. After the first 3 shooters all shooting 8’s Grant Elsley stepped up and drilled the 10 ring for the win.

It was great to see new faces join us for the shoot and as always fabulous to see the same familiar archers whose love of the sport make it a fun weekend. Thank you to all the LGFA members for all the hard work put in and Thank you to everyone that attended.

We hope to see people back for our one day Garry Dawson Challenge in Sept.

  • Twin Cities March 2019

    Twin Cities March 2019

    3DAAA Victorian State Series

The first Victorian 3DAAA event of 2019 – An excellent event put on by Twin City Archers weather was great and the group I shot with was full of fun, challenges and smiles, thanks Bill Holmes Martin, Sam and Levi.

The new Semi Pro Division saw four of our MBO team from 2018 take to the challenge Paul Eagle Tony Brezic Ken Smith and Troy Hanson and keeping the scores pretty even on some challenging courses great soothing guys

A thank you to Mike Lambert and Bill Holmes for coming across from SA to be a part of our event.

Day one saw a quick briefing to cover course layout, emergency procedures and then it was down to the art of placing arrows on the targets set out by our course setters. From the use of dead ground across what appeared flat ground, the shadows that flickered across the targets and the deceiving distances.

Aside from the combination of archers from young and old celebrating shots to those that were questioning how they could have missed the target, the archers in all enjoyed themselves.

Courses were set out that were challenging and made you think of your distance judging, quartered and rolled targets of shot placement and where to aim, add to this the brilliant sunshine, shadows and wind all added to the event, the jubilant calls of a successful shot over the course not mentioning any names Neil Morris (great score Neil); this all created a fun atmosphere to the event.

3D Archery presents challenges to the archer no other form of archery can challenge the archer with, from the novice to the most experienced archer each shot presents a unique opportunity to combine experience and skills to make the shot.

With day one over, the resetting of the courses for day now done, focus turned to where the group of 30 plus archers wanted to go for dinner this was soon decided bookings made and the archers made their way to the venue. Dinner allows the members to catch up and talk archery and whatever else comes to the table.

The day doesn’t end there, thanks to Twin City Archers for opening the club rooms up for a night of fun and leaving it up to us to set up some fun ideas of Micro 3D Targets – but all this still left us with challenging shots on the course – they were not as easy as shooting minties (had to be there) but same moto it’s moments like these you need a ….,,,, was to be played out on day two.

Day 2 saw the groups set out with great optimism, and plans for those perfect rounds, for two of our members Drew Orton taking out another 2x 100s & Alex Spath with 1x 100 congratulations.

Jo Mufale thanks for creating a great breakfast for the group on Sunday, and the Twin City members who looked after lunches through the event.

Our next event is with the Mornington Peninsula Bowmen on the 13th & 14th of April 20019 – great camping facilities and local motels – come along and join us for some more 3D Archery – Even if you have not tried unmarked 3D come along and let us know so we can help you with enjoying the fun of 3D Archery In Australia – for more details and news go to http://3daaa.com.au/ – look forward to seeing you there

    Gavin Brown Memorial 2019

Ipswich Field Archery Club held the 10th Gavin Brown Memorial Shoot over the Australia Day weekend, 26th and 27th of January 2019. There were 67 archers over the weekend that shot to remember a great friend and archer. We shot 20 targets on Saturday and had a few fun shots in the afternoon. A 90m mule deer shot closest to the centre was won by Dwayn Callon. The iron boar was also out for fun and was won by Josh McEwan; shooting a 14 at 50m. Not to forget our young archers having a blast shooting at balloons hanging from Ray Knights drone. Thank you Ray for spending your time encouraging our young archers and having fun. On Sunday we shot 20 targets; archers had the choice to make up points by shooting at either large or small targets for extra points. There was a 21st target you had the choice to shoot, the iron boar. As a result 8 shooters won a free club shoot by having a go at it and hitting the 10.

On the day the highest score shot overall was 413 by Brett Pirlo.

The most awesome shot was also Brett Pirlo at the 70m lion, shooting 11 at 70m.

  • 2018 3DAAA Australian Championships

    2018 3DAAA Australian Championships

    3D AAA Nationals 2018

The 2018 3DAAA Australian Championships were held at Nambucca Heads on the weekend of 10-11 November and were a massive success.

244 3D Archery Specialist plus their families spent a fantastic weekend in the area. The archers took to a very challenging 50 Target course in the NSW State Forest at Nambucca Heads.

Two fantastic days of sunshine and great weather saw all of the archers take on a well set and challenging course. Dark targets in dark holes, great tunnel shots, hidden ground and angles up to 20 degrees and quartered targets made for some of the best courses in recent 3D history.

Within the divisions, 3DAAA had 34 Hunter class shooters as the strongest division for this year’s nationals only edging out the MBO division by two archers. This was great to see the division designed for the Hunters being supported.

The women’s FBO division saw 14 ladies take on the courses, which is also the highest number of female shooters this division in the last 4 years, and great to see 3D growing stronger with our ladies.

51 Youth class Archers all the way from CUBJ to 15-17 classes for both the young ladies and gentlemen of our sport which is great to see.

Friday night saw the celebration of the State Series and National Indoor awards at the Nambucca RSL with well over 150 people showing their support for the Archers achievements over the year.

Saturday started the first 30 targets for the weekend with Will Bristow (HC) taking the tough courses head on with a highest Saturday score of 298/300 leading Ben Doyle (MBO) by 11 points and the rest of the top 10 within 8 points, an outstanding achievement showing the dedication and skill of these Archers. William (Billy) Watson leading the unaided divisions with a great score of 248/300 with no sights, and the top 10 unaided shooters all being within 30 points.

This year saw the first Junior shoot out challenge which gave the younger archers the chance to shoot in front of a very supportive crowd for their shot at giveaway prizes starting from the Cubs who got to shoot at 2 3D targets covered in target squares of varying sizes which they got to nominated the square they went for all adding to the excitement of the new format.

This was followed by the top 10 adults for both unaided and aided shooters.

Libby White from the hunter region managed to edge out the competition to take out the unaided division.

Brett Pirlo from QLD took out the sighted division with a single arrow closest to the middle shoot off from Ben Doyle,

Brett Pirlo shooting for Hoyt Archery and Ben Doyle shooting for Mathews Inc along with all of the Archers young and old gave everyone a great show and the future of 3D archery in Australia is looking good with the major Bow Manufacturers supporting more and more shooters in our sport.

Sunday came with another beautiful day and the chase was on for those final points to round out the year.
